512 - Dead to Rights (74)

Sam and Jesse were in their car screaming across the city to see what had happened to Michael Westen and found feds at the loft removing boxes. They correctly assumed that Pearce had arrested him and decided to: Go Get Him. Using Fiona's car, Jesse did a spinning tail bump on their convoy to get them to stop and talk. Pierce came out of the car screaming and flailing, still in no mind to listen to anything despite Sam telling her that they had Homeland Security involved and waiting for Mike to show up. Finally, using the image of Max's waiting wife, Mike got her to relent and check it out. Then he had to offer to talk to Tavian wearing a wire but completely unarmed. He said goodbye to Fiona who had been captured as well. On the top of a parking garage Tavian did admit to killing Max and framing Mike and when Sam was shown looking at Pierce knowingly, she merely scowled and nodded. Tavian asked Mike to make a deal and Mike showed him the microphone saying it was too late.  He pulled his gun and Mike countered that he would try and get them to go easy on him; but, he said, "one way or the other, this ends today." "Well you're half-right," Tavian said. "It does end… for me but not for you"  then he jumped off the building. So, there were no "answers" for us like there might have been if Pierce hadn't been so bitchy. She was later shown dragging Mike out of the federal building by the arm and letting him go. Madeline showed up to take Michael home and was snubbed by Pierce. She said that she had preempted Fiona from coming because she wanted to talk to him alone – actually, whe wanted to rag on him some more for not considering how his running around dealing with problems effected all of them. He told her "it's over now… at least I hope so."

While we were watching Mike arrive back at the loft and listening to the voice-over telling us about how stress can cause a spy to not pay attention to details, Not-so-dead Larry got the drop on him. He told Mike that he had bribed a guard to escape from the Albanian prison where he had been extradited because: "I guess I'm not done haunting you yet." He confessed that he had come back to get him to help on a new job, breaking in to the British Consulate, and showed him Anson Fullerton who was tied up in his trunk and was going to help. Larry chuckled at Fiona's flowery touch in decorating the loft and while distracted Mike was able to extract a knife hidden in a lamp shade. Anson said that he was a psychiatrist working for the DIA and could get the access codes, and besides: "he has my wife." Larry showed Mike a TV feed on his cell phone of a woman tied with a bomb around her neck. So, Mike decided to go along with the job and passed Anson the knife, telling him to cut his way out of the trunk and go find Sam at the Crest Hotel. Then Larry angrily told Mike that he had always looked on Mike as a son; "but, that ended when you sent me to prison. So, if you don't want to get shot in the neck you do what I say and then you cross your fingers; because, daddy is in one of those moods." At the consulate he made Mike play a dim-witted underling when he checked in as Larry Barashell, a newly hired bio-hazard tech, for a company located one floor below. He then faked a minor "spill" to con the guards into locking down the building and letting no one in; and told Mike that if things didn't go well Anson's wife Claire would automatically explode in two hours. Anson found Sam and when he said the name 'Larry,' Sam told him to "stop talking" and immediately called Fiona. He also called Jesse and told him to go tell Madeline that "it's a Disneyworld kind of day"; but, when they arrived at Anson's house it had already blown up, which didn't make sense. Anson demanded to come with them to take down Larry. While Mike was cutting through a vent, Larry saw Sam, Fiona and Anson trying to get in a side door on his phone's video feed. He called them and midst insulting banter let slip "I never wanted to kill Michael," then told them to stay away because he could see them coming and would kill mike. Sam told them "he's bluffing" but Anson pointed out the Freudian slip and said when a sociopath did that it wasn't a good thing. Larry was going to kill Mike either way. Then, when Larry and Michael got up in the consulate he slugged Michael in the head with a metal box for trying to help Anson. He said "you are going to go plant a report in a diplomatic pouch and a few nice people are going to rot in prison so a few million dollars lands in my bank account." He threatened that people didn't realize Michael "really deserved to be burned… for what you did in Chechnya. You watched me kill those people then helped me cover it up." He told Mike to clean his blood off do he didn't leave any DNA behind.

Larry went into a control room to erase logs of their entry and sent Mike to another room to log in and be buzzed into the vault. Mike called Fiona who told him about Claire being dead and Larry's intentions. He told her to stay back but she faked like they were discussing a plan in order to send Sam and Anson away to get some equipment. While they were gone she attached a bomb of T-4 (uncut RDX or Cyclonite) to the window of Larry's control room then set up on a roof top to begin shooting at the bullet-proof window. Larry called to banter with her again and gloat that it was bullet-proof glass. While they were talking she blew the bomb killing Larry, but a few moments later another bomb blew on the first floor killing the guards. When Mike came out she was in a daze and explained that she had only planted one bomb. Back at the loft, as she was flagellating herself for "killing those men," Anson burst in using a key he had stolen from Fiona's purse. He revealed that he had set the whole thing up and had a lot of 'evidence' on Fiona including the taped 'confession' that she had just given; which, someone would send to the CIA and MI6. Unless, of course, Michael did exactly what he was told, Fiona was going to rot in prison. He said he had also planted a bug in her purse. The woman he blew up was just "some lady" and he was the one who got Larry out of prison then 'hired' him to do the consulate job – although Larry didn't know it. "That creepy father-son thing" in the files, he said, was just what he needed; and continued that he didn't need to be a very good psychiatrist to know that "nobody brings out the mad bomber in you like Larry."

Michael angrily pinned Anson against the refrigerator and asked: "Who are you?" Anson calmly replied: "I'm the last one of 'em, the man who didn't want to be found, the one you missed in Caracas.  The one who sent Tavian to kill Max when you wouldn't leave well enough alone.  The one who watched you tear down every shred of the organization that burned you. The organization that I spent half my life building." He told Mike that he expected him to keep his mouth shut in his meeting with Pierce the next day. "After that, we'll talk about all the other things I want you to do… it's a long list." The next day Mike did keep his mouth shut. Pierce said that his standing with the agency would not be effected. She said that "you have fans and you have detractors." "Let me guess which side you're on," he quipped. She said that she had been assigned to continue being his contact whether either of them liked it or not; because, they weren't going to loop in anyone else about using a burned spy. She said she did finally get to make the call to Max's wife and he asked her to say that "I was with her at the end and he said he loved her" [What he actually asked was for Mike to be the one to call her and say that!] Anson later told Mike and Fiona that he had watched him be short and sweet with Pierce. He also answered Michael that he had been a young DIA psychiatrist and hated to see burned talent go to waste. So he and 'Management' "two guys with a dream to use burned spies to carry out ops that legitimate agencies wouldn't touch."  He claimed that initially he had opposed Michaels recruitment but: "something your mother said in one of our sessions" changed his mind. About "five years ago I arranged a substitute for Madeline's therapist… but you turned out to be less easy to manipulate than she led me to believe." When Michael responded with "you son of a bitch" Anson retorted "funny you should use that turn of the phrase, it's your father you should be upset with. The things that man gave us before he passed away."  Fiona broke in with a question but Anson said "look at your boyfriend honey, he can barely hear a word I'm saying." It was true, Michaels eyes were glazed over in stunned silence. Anson told Fiona to: "enjoy the sunset, it'll become dark soon."
What a stunner! A well written, if not inordinately complicated and convoluted, plot when compared with others in this series. We're being asked to believe that Anson has super-human psychiatric powers and can basically read minds; but, hey it's better than the obsurd premises that we were forced to believe when the Jesse character was introduced. I do have a feeling in my gut, however, that this is not Kansas anymore, and I'll say it before Sam gets a chance, this guy's a dick.
